Expressions is a publication of DMACC student literature and art. Included student works are selected by DMACC faculty and staff. Issues of Expressions typically include: prose, poetry, illustration and photography.
Expressions, over its years of publication, has not been numbered, dated, or self-described with uniformity: • Some issues display volume numbers, e.g. volume two or volume XIV, others, e.g. Expressions Sixteen, are simply given numbers. Both Arabic and Roman numerals have been used. • Up to and including volume XV, dates are given as single years, eg. Volume XV is 1992. Beginning with Expression Sixteen, dates are shown as 1993/1994. This continues until a volume not present in the collect when the issues return to a single year designation. • Expressions 22, in the front matter, gives the dates 1998-1999, 1999-2000, and 2000-2001. The next issue present in this collection is marked as 2003/2004, and includes no number or volume designation of any type. It may be that at this point the numbering system was abandoned, as subsequent issues present in this collection include dates, but no numbers.
The title page of volume one states “Expressions contains selected work from some of the Creative Writing Contest winners and honorable mentions along with Commercial Art students at Des Moines Area Community College.” The title page of the issue marked 2003/2004 states “Expressions is a student literary/art publication of Des Moines Community College.” Other issues include similar but varied short descriptions.
Most editions of Expressions include lists of individuals and companies to be recognized and thanked for their support, such as: educational services, college supporters, college help, special help, additional help, corporate donors, individual donors, judges, creative writing judges, staff, advisor, etc.
From volume 1 - "Expressions contains selected work from some of the Creative Writing Contest winners and honorable mentions along with Commercial Art students at Des Moines Area Community College. Design, topography, and layout was accomplished by Journalism students."
The magazine is possibly a spin-off of the "Expressions" / "Express Yourself" page which appears irregularly in The Ecletic (Ankeny campus student newspaper) in the following issues: 1975 - July & September; 1976 - January, February, March
